The Veronica 1W PLL



The Veronica 1W PLL first marketed in 1996 is still the favorite choice for broadcast engineers at all levels from the hobbyist through to the professional licensed operator. In early 1998 the PLL 2 was released and then in January 2000 the latest version was released, the PLL 3 'Easy-Tune™'.

LM317 TRANSMITTER

The circuit is given above and needs very little explanation. It operates from a 10 volt supply and regulates to about 4.5 volts. This is used to excite the tuned circuit VC1/L1. The tapping is about 3% of the total number of turns of L1. A 6% L1 tap is coupled to the control input if the LM317T regulator chip and BINGO - It "hoots". You can draw WATTS of power from a 12% tapping of L1.

5-Watt Transmitter

This is a very simple 5 watt CW TX based upon a TTL logic chip. There is just one "tricky" component and this is Cx. This component should have an impedance of about 10 - 50 ohms at the frequency of interest. If you wish to reduce the transmitter power, increase the value of Cx. It is Cx which causes the square wave from the output transistor to approximate a sine waveform.

  • 1.8 MHz = 4.7nf
  • 3.5 MHz = 2.2nf
  • 7.0 MHz = 1.2nf
  • 10 MHz = 820pf
  • 14 MHz = 560pf
  • 18 MHz = 470pf
  • 24 MHz = 390pf
  • 28 MHz = 330pf

The AM1000 is FCC certified and legal! When properly installed the AM1000 is legal to operate. Avoid problems with the Federal officials and the embarrassment and potential for fines of being found to be operating a pirate or illegal radio station. When the Federal agent comes calling instead of fear and dread and having your station shut down you can pass inspection! If you are thinking of buying and operating an uncertified kit or product be aware that may be illegal.

E AM Transmitter



Class E transmitters are high efficiency, reliable, solid-state transmitters. They are simpler to build than similar transmitters using vacuum tubes, and are significantly less expensive to both build and to operate. Class E is a switching mode of operation, and exhibits extremely linear modulation characteristics, making these amplifiers well suited for high quality, amplitude modulation. They are also very well suited for amplification of frequency modulation or other modes where linear amplification is not a requirement.

Short History:
My hobby is FM and TV DXing, receiving distant radio and TV signals. I started this in 1984, and a member of the Benulux dx club

before that had operated an illegal (FM) radio transmitter for five years. In 1989 I installed a dish for receiving satellite transmissions.In the autumn of 1997 I bought a computer, discovered the Internet, and since then have enjoyed developing my own homepage.

Television standards:
Recently a lot has been accomplished to facilitate easy reception of foreigen broadcasts by simplifying television standards. The discontinuation of the high-difinition French 819 lines standard and the rather poor British 405 lines standard left the world with just 2 standards; 525 lines. (generally accompanied by the American NTSC colour system) and 625 lines (usually in PAL or SECAM colour). The technical characteristics of the various transmission systems are given in the tables below. The colour standards (PAL, SECAM, NTSC) and television
system used by each country are indicated at the top of the country entry. Antenna polarization varies from one transmitter to another and either (H)orizontal or (V)ertical.
